“Tube and pipe plants are the
world’s lifeline. They are used to
create infrastructures around the
globe which provide us with a re-
liable supply of drinking water and
energy. They are essential in ar-
chitecture as well as in plant and
automotive construction. Today’s
tubes are high-tech, high-quality
products”.
These first sentences from the SMS
Meer homepage are more than just
an introduction; they are also key-
words to describe Berthold Genser’s
career. Born in 1964, he graduat-
ed as a Mechanical Engineer from
the University of Duisburg, locat-
ed in the Ruhr region of Germany.
Directly afterwards he started his
career at Mannesmann Demag Hüt-
tentechnik as a Project Manager for
Hot Rolling Mills for Thin Slabs. Ad-
ditionally he started a trainee pro-
gram for sales within the company.
For almost ten years he worked as
Technical Sales Manager for LSAW
Pipe Plants at SMS Meer, before he
was promoted to the position of
General Manager Technical Sales for
LSAW Pipe Plants at SMS Meer and
later for the whole Welded Tube
and Pipe Sales in the newly formed
Product Unit Welded Tube and Pipe
Plants. When asked what still fasci-
nates him about his job, Berthold
Genser answers quickly and direct-
ly: “It is always a big and interest-
ing challenge for me. I have been
given the possibility for permanent
development, which is the oppo-
site of a daily routine.” Whether
Berthold Genser has to develop a
project over a long time or within
a short space of time, he is always
dedicated to what he is doing. His
close relationship to his customers
around the world has given him
wide intercultural competence and
the different cultures fascinate him
on every business trip. Each sales
project is a new challenge for him
and has to be geared to the cus-
tomer’s needs.
One of the reasons why Berthold
Genser joined the European Man-
agement Board at ITA is the first-
class exchange with other interna-
tional professionals from different
branches. One of the reasons why
the ITA needs such professionals
as Berthold Genser is his passion-
ate approach to the tube and pipe
industry.
