High accuracy is the key to success
for ultra high strength couplings
used in down hole drilling appli-
cations. Easy thread up reliable
operation and strict adherence to
API standards are the minimum
requirements. Since couplings are
manufactured from micro alloyed
quenched and tempered steel,
high-precision and high capability
equipment is already required for
the first process step: cutting the
blanks from the pipe. Especially
since API couplings are furnished
in two classes: Class T and Class SM
(Metal Spray): The latter has a su-
perficial hardening process (based
on Nickel, Chrome, Boron and Sil-
icon) that provides better erosion
and corrosion resistance.
A leading global manufacturer of
couplings in Central America an-
nounced recently their decision
to purchase the RingSaw® made
by German manufacturer REIKA
(Hagen). The machine with the
cutting head orbiting the fixed
workpiece, has become public
knowledge and is celebrated for its
high precision cutting technique.
Due to the special cutting tool de-
sign and process the cut is almost
completely square and free from
burrs. It’s not for nothing that the
RingSaw® is carrying the symbol
of a shark on its outer skin. The
outstanding lifetimes and excel-
lent results (high operating cost
savings compared to conventional
carbide saws and at the same time
a much higher output with better
quality of the RingSaw® products)
were convincing for many clients
worldwide. So this customer was
also convinced quickly.
REIKA was able to offer the ideal
solution for the production of API
couplings with the RingSaw® as
its core. The line is completed by
additional stations, like built-in
robot handling systems, automatic
length measuring, marking to au-
tomatic palletizing the couplings
in special containers.
The RingSaw® is a young but al-
ready proven line of machines for
cutting pipes, profiles and rods
that can be used for workpieces
within a diameter range from 10 to
610 mm with wall thicknesses from
1 to 150 mm.
The machine concept is purely
electro-mechanical without any hy-
draulics and therefore oil-free. The
cutting process is dry, but can be
optimized either with a mini cool-
ant or full-emulsion system.
Since the machine bed is totally oil-
free and designed as a closed water
draining and reservoir area, there is
no need for additional foundations
apart from basic machine fixings.
The chip conveyor can be connect-
ed directly to the machine bed. The
RingSaw® is fully equipped with a
safety housing according to state
of the art machine-tool style. This
offers utmost safety for the opera-
tors and environmental protection
at its best.
